Our Lady of Fatima
May 13th 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Mary to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal. Mary appeared to Jacinta, Francisco and Lucia on the 13th day of the month from May to October, 1917. She invited them to pray, fast and do penance for the sake of the world, which was witnessing the atrocities of the first world war. The children heard Mary warn them about worse atrocities to come, but she told them to trust in the victory of her Immaculate Heart. The messages of Fatima were a great gift to the world in the twentieth century and they continue to guide and inspire the Church today. On this day, Pope Francis will express the importance of this event by making a pilgrimage to Fatima to pray for the peace of the world.
We will also celebrate the miracles of Fatima at St Mary’s Cathedral in Middlesbrough.
On Saturday 13th May we will have 9.15am mass with devotions before and afterwards. This is a great opportunity to receive the graces associated with this event. Also, in September, we will welcome a replica of the statue from Fatima that was blessed by Pope Paul VI in 1967 for the purpose of travelling around the world to spread the message. As a preparation for this event, we will have special devotions to Our Lady of Fatima on the first Saturday of each month in the lead up.
Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us.
St Jacinta and St Francisco, pray for us.
